Understanding Your Home Insurance Policy

In order to get the coverage you need for your property, you need to know what is going to be covered by your home insurance policy. You can find all the information you need to get started here. Don't purchase a policy without knowing what your options are ahead of time.

Policy Coverage Available

Your home insurance will cover any home that is on the property as well as any detached homes that reside on the property. All the items within your home will also be covered, so make sure that you provide your insurance company with a list of your personal belongings so they can determine a replacement cost.

There will be some boundaries in regards to physical injury, property damage and medical expenses. Also, if you are ever forced to leave your home, you will be provided with living expenses. The coverage varies on each item, so be sure to work with your provider to determine how much coverage you need.

What a Typcial Policy Won't Cover

You will typically need additional coverage for damage caused by earthquakes, floods, landslide, tornadoes, etc. Damage caused by a contractor working at your home, pest control and pet damage might also require different insurance depending on the type of pet and the amount of pests you own.

How Much Coverage Do You Need?

Many homeowners make the mistake of only carrying the minimum coverage because it costs the least amount of money. However, if your home suffers any major damage, minimum coverage will typically not cover the cost to replace or repair your home and belongings. It's important to determine what valuables are most important to insure in your home before purchasing your policy.

Types of Coverage

There are two basic forms of coverage to choose from - actual cash value insurance and replacement cost coverage. An actual cash value policy is less expensive, but insurers your home at the face value. This means it will typically not cover the cost to rebuild your home or replace your belongings at the depreciated value.

Replacement cost coverage will come with a higher premium, but it is designed to replace your home and all of the items inside it at an equal value to what you paid.

Ask Questions about Your Policy

If you have special collectibles, guns, jewelry, paintings, or anything of that nature then you will need to check and see how the coverage is handled. Your general coverage might not be enough to replace these items if damaged or stolen. You also need to adjust your policy accordingly if you own a pool, spa, or other high risk items.
