Motorcycle Insurance

Motorcycles provide a freedom and a thrill that traditional vehicles can't touch. However, anytime you ride, there's always a possibility that you could get hurt or that your bike could get damaged. The most important function of motorcycle insurance is to help you pay your medical bills if you're involved in an accident. Motorcycle insurance can also help pay to repair or replace your bike to get you back on the road as soon as possible. Read on to learn more about insurance policies for motorcycles, cruisers, dirt bikes, sport bikes, and electric scooters.

Coverage Options

When you request a motorcycle insurance quote, you'll see that most policies include the same coverages as traditional auto insurance policies. We've outlined these coverages below.

  • Collision - this coverage pays to repair or replace your bike if it is damaged in a collision with another vehicle or an object. Collision coverage is not required by law, so many discount motorcycle insurance policies do not include it. Collision coverage would reimburse you up to the actual cash value of your bike in the event of an accident.
  • Comprehensive - if your bike is damaged by an event not related to a collision, comprehensive coverage will pay for the damage. Common covered events include wind, flood, fire, theft, and vandalism. Remember that your motorcycle insurance rates will be slightly higher if you include comprehensive and collision, or property damage coverage, on your policy.
  • Property damage liability - if you are involved in an accident where you damage someone else's property and you are at fault, this coverage will pay for the damages.
  • Bodily injury liability - if you are at fault in a collision, the bodily injury liability portion of your motorcycle insurance will pay for the damages that result from the death or injury of a passenger on your motorcycle or another driver. You could be held liable for lost earnings, medical expenses, and pain and suffering.
  • Uninsured motorist protection - if your state requires uninsured motorists coverage, your motorcycle insurance quote should include the coverage by default. However, most states do not require this coverage, which pays for the damages resulting from the injury or death of you or a guest passenger on your motorcycle when the party at fault either doesn't carry insurance or doesn't carry enough.

Motorcycle Insurance Discounts

There are a number of factors that determine your insurance rate, such as the type of bike you drive and how old you are. Typically, motorcycle insurance only applies to street-legal vehicles, such as cruisers, eligible sport bikes, scooters, etc. For dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles, you may need a special type of insurance. You can qualify for discount motorcycle insurance usually if you insure more than one bike with the same company, insure a vehicle with the same carrier, are a mature rider, or complete a motorcycle safety course.

Motorcycle Safety

Motorcycle safety is essential to protecting your life and your bike. As an added bonus, completing approved motorcycle safety courses can qualify you for lower motorcycle insurance rates. For example, some insurers offer substantial discounts to riders who complete a Motorcycle Safety Foundation or Military Safety Course. These classes inform riders of the risks they face as motorcycle drivers and explain how to offset them for a lifetime of safe riding.
