Auto insurance in Maryland should always been in effect for drivers. Letting it lapse can lead to a variety of penalties, including jail sentences.
Because of the high accident rate, all drivers must carry the minimum levels of required auto insurance coverage or risk having a license suspended and spending time in jail.
Auto insurance laws say the minimum liability coverage must be $20,000 per person or $40,000 per accident for bodily injury and $15,000 per accident for property.
Motorcycle insurance requirements are $20,000 per person for bodily injury or $40,000 per accident, and $10,000 for property per accident.
Don't allow your auto insurance in Maryland to lapse or you risk losing your license plates and vehicle registration privileges. You also have to pay uninsured motorist penalties and up to $25 for a registration restoration fee.
