Louisiana auto insurance laws say proof of insurance is a must for most vehicles. There are a number of ways to prove coverage.
Drivers of all motor vehicles must carry an insurance card of binder, an identification card issued by an insurance company, a policy declaration page or a written statement from the insurer. Liability insurance coverage is not required for parade vehicles, state-owned autos and buses owned by individual cities.
Minimum auto insurance liability requirements in Louisiana are $15,000 for each person in an accident, $30,000 for bodily injury or death per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
Required insurance coverage is a minimum of $10,000 for each person in an accident, $20,000 per accident for bodily injury or death, and $10,000 for property damage.
Auto insurance laws say a driver who can't provide an insurance card could face fines, penalties and suspension of the vehicle registration. But if you're caught without one, there usually is a grace period to comply with the regulations and produce coverage proof.
