Delaware Auto Insurance Guide

Being one of the few states that requires personal injury protection on top of minimum liability auto insurance, Delaware residents tend to pay a little more of their policies than others. Fortunately, the state's minimum auto insurance requirements are lower than many other states. Find out everything you need to know about auto insurance in Delaware in this guide!

Delaware Insurance Regulations

According to Delaware state law, all vehicles on the road must meet the required auto insurance coverage standards. A new vehicle can't even be registered in Delaware until it meets the state's insurance guidelines. Failure to own a minimum policy or provide proof of insurance can result in a fine, loss of registration, and loss of driver's license.

Mandatory Minimum Coverage in Delaware

Compared to many other states, the minimum auto insurance laws in Delaware are somewhat lower. The state uses the 15/30/10 requirement:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury to one person in an accident
  • $30,000 for bodily injury for more than one person in an accident
  • $10,000 property damage in an accident

Unlike many other states, Delaware includes personal injury protection or PIP in their required auto insurance coverage. The minimum amount of required PIP in Delaware is as follows:

  • $15,000 for any one person in an accident
  • $30,000 for all people in an accident, with no more than $15,000 to any one person

Motorcycle Coverage Requirements

Like a normal vehicle, you need to meet Delaware's auto insurance requirements in order to legally drive a motorcycle. Delaware uses the same requirements for motorcycles and normal vehicles:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury to one person in an accident
  • $30,000 for bodily injury for more than one person in an accident
  • $10,000 property damage in an accident

Delaware also requires PIP insurance for motorcycle drivers, using the same 15/30 standard as other vehicles. However, keep in mind that many auto insurance companies only offer a $15,000 deductible on their minimum PIP policies, since motorcycles tend to be more dangerous. That means you'll still have a legal policy that meets the minimum requirements, but it won't actually provide you with any benefits.

Delaware Auto Insurance Advice

Since Delaware requires all drivers to have personal injury protection included in their auto insurance policy, the state has one of the highest average insurance costs. However, there are ways that you can help lower your premiums. Many people are able to get lower rates by increasing their deductible. Others get discounts by using the same provider for all of their insurance needs. By shopping around and digging for discounts, you don't have to overpay for auto insurance in Delaware.
