What Is Visitor Health Insurance?
Are you traveling abroad soon? If so, visitor’s health insurance can give you the peace of mind of knowing your medical expenses will be covered in case of any emergencies. You can customize your policy to the type of travel you’re doing, whether business or pleasure. Visitor’s health plans can also cover a wide variety of health concerns. If you are a student going to study abroad for an extended period of time, there are even visitor’s health insurance policies designed specifically for this situation. Whatever your purposes for traveling, a visitor’s health insurance policy is a wise investment before you visit another country. Aside from the length of coverage and the price, you will also want to consider other details when shopping for a policy. Here are the five factors you should evaluate when deciding on a visitor’s health insurance policy.
- Benefits. There are two primary categories of visitor insurance based on the type of benefits they provide. You can either opt for a fixed-benefit plan (a.k.a. a scheduled coverage plan) or a comprehensive coverage plan. The fixed-benefit plan covers individual expenses, each of which has a limit. The comprehensive plan, on the other hand, has a policy limit and will cover any type of medical expense up to the limit of the policy. Typically, the comprehensive plan is more expensive, but it is also sometimes more useful.
- Provider network. Your insurer can restrict what providers can supply medical care under the policy. Some policies allow you to see any healthcare provider or visit any facility you wish.
- AM rating. You want to be sure your visitor insurance company has a solid reputation before you take out a policy with them. You should get an idea of the quality of service they provide to their existing customers. One way to do this is to review customer testimonials on the company’s website. You might also consult independent agencies that rate companies on the caliber of their service. One such company, A.M. Best maintains a website with a wealth of helpful information.
- Refund. Traveling inevitably comes with delays and/or cancelations. If this happens to you, you want to be sure your visitor’s insurance policy comes with a refund policy.
- Renewal. In the event that you decide to extend your stay abroad, you will also need to renew your visitor insurance coverage. This may or may not be possible, depending on your policy and insurer. Some insurers allow you to renew but your benefits are reduced during the extended time.
